Twelve Manhattanites have been chosen to serve on the jury for the first criminal trial of a U.S. president. The judge ordered that the jurors’ identities be kept confidential during the trial and that reporters withhold some information that could identify them. He said he had heard about some of former President Donald J. Trump’s other criminal cases, but he did not have an opinion about him. He said he follows Mr. Trump’s former fixer, Michael D. Cohen, who is expected to be a key witness, on social media. He said he believed Mr. Trump had done some good for the country, adding “it goes both ways.”

RELATED: Full 12-person jury set for Trump trial after Thursday proceedings. Even the lawyers in that case weren’t permitted to know the identities of the jurors, a step further than the precautions in place for the Trump trial in New York. In this hyperconnected social media age, anonymity is hard to achieve. Meanwhile, a special hearing on whether Trump has violated a gag order for his continued social media attacks is set for next week. When anonymous juries go wrongMaybe Trump remembers one of the most infamous, anonymous jury incidents, featuring another famous New Yorker, the mob boss John Gotti.

Seven jurors down, five more to go. The case against Mr. Trump stems from a hush-money payment to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, who during the 2016 presidential campaign threatened to go public with her story of a sexual encounter with Mr. Trump. Prosecutors say Mr. Trump concealed her story, and others, to influence the election. But prosecutors say he falsified business records to cover up the sex scandal, and charged him last year with 34 felony counts. Many expected jury selection to be a weekslong slog, but seven jurors were seated on Tuesday afternoon.

A former Connecticut state trooper was acquitted on Friday of manslaughter and other charges in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Black man after a car chase four years ago. The trooper, Brian D. North, was criminally charged in 2022 in the killing of the teenager, Mubarak Soulemane, on Jan. 15, 2020. The killing occurred after Mr. Soulemane, who had schizophrenia, led state troopers on a chase that ended in West Haven, Conn., where Mr. North, who is white, fired seven shots through the driver’s side window. The six-person jury hearing the case in Milford found Mr. North not guilty on all charges, including manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. “This was a difficult case,” Judge H. Elon Musk last week announced his company Neuralink has implanted its first chip in a human test subject. AdvertisementInterest from potential test subjects is rather slim, as is: just 2% would "definitely" consider getting a computer chip implanted in their brain "within the next year," below the margin of error for the poll. Overall, just 5% of respondents would at all consider getting a chip in the next year. Men were more than three times as likely as women (13% vs 4%) to be down for a commercially produced brain chip eventually. All told, 19% of respondents who said they read Dune would get a commercially available brain chip, and 11% of respondents who said they read Dune would get one this year.

Many retailers are extending holiday shopping discounts to record levels and for longer periods. To get the best discounts, you might have to head to your nearest mall. To get the best holiday deals, you might have to go to the mall. That worked in the last few years but didn't this year because financially stressed consumers became even more cost-conscious and looked for the best deals, he added. "Retailers moved a lot of those sales earlier than usual, and then it became one big event culminating on Cyber Monday."

Many are delaying the cost as buy now, pay later programs are expected to have their biggest month ever. Many are paying via "buy now, pay later" platforms such as Klarna or Afterpay, which let shoppers pay in installments every week or month. Buy now, pay later also allows people to borrow less expensively as they get the pricing interest-free if paid off in time. Indeed, the Fed's "2022 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking" found that 83% of respondents paid off their buy now, pay later programs on time. Compounding the problem is that people tend to spend more when using buy now, pay later programs, suggesting an overconfidence in what they can afford.

Huge numbers of them haven’t seen their owners since the start of “Movember,” the annual no-shave fundraiser for men’s health. But the razors needn’t fear: The urge of men to express themselves by trimming and removing their hair, facial and otherwise, runs deep. Even Paleolithic Man shaved his hair on occasion, using shells or flint blades as a crude razor. Ancient Egypt was the earliest society to make hair removal a way of life for both sexes. The whole head was shaved and covered by a wig, a bald head being a practical solution against head lice and overheating.
